Taryn Wahl Episode Thoughts…

-Anyone recognize the voice at the start? It’s Hank Hill. Probably old like us if you caught that reference!

-Just one more heads up before you dive too deeply. There are topics in here that may be hard to hear. Proceed with caution!

-We sang again…sorry.

-I want to touch Blair’s face…or give him a hug. Damn Rona virus.

-We mentioned Tori Williams Douglas. She is one of our favourite follows on twitter. Check her out here: twitter.com/toriglass

-The wonderful Taryn Wahl! Thanks for the intro, Donovan!

-Before we dive in, think it through honestly. What comes to mind when you hear the words “Planned Parenthood”? Ask yourself the same question after the interview. Did you have any misconceptions?

-Honestly, we still had no idea going into this what all Planned Parenthood was involved in. We assumed the episode would be all about abortion. Nope. Glad we were able to learn!

-Purity culture taught us to either not talk about sex or attach a ton of shame to it.

-What’s the Billy Graham Rule? Here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modesto_Manifesto. It’s no wonder so many folks who grew up in this culture have trouble engaging with the opposite sex. We were scared to get wooed in by their sexuality. Barf.

-“Choose your own adventure book”: No doubt! We talked for hours about fascinating stuff, but had to cut a bunch out in order to keep the time down! Taryn has so much experience and wisdom to share!

-Guidelines in these discussions are so important. I’m glad that Taryn takes this so seriously when chatting with young folks. Not only that, but Taryn went out of her way to make sure both Blair and I felt safe and comfortable!

-I really appreciate how openly Taryn talked about the rough upbringing she had while still honouring her parents.

-The church on the outside can be soooo appealing and look so safe and “family like”. I do believe it can be that way, but rarely is. Unfortunately, Taryn is another person who was drawn to Jesus and the idea of forgiveness and community, then pushed away by Jesus followers.

-As Taryn talks about, the church did a lot of really good things, but for Queer folks and those with mental health problems, the church can be more harmful than helpful.

-“I Kissed Dating Goodbye” by Joshua Harris is basically the handbook for purity culture. Here’s a video on him leaving as mentioned later on in the pod: https://youtu.be/P8x-GEzCC78

-Colonization and Christianity have unfortunately gone hand in hand for…forever in North America.

-Christians and boundaries: As a Christian, I admit, we tend to suck baddddd at boundaries and being trauma informed. I think misunderstanding of trauma is one of the biggest shortfalls of the current manifestation of church.

-“I’m just able to be myself” with friends now that she has left the church behind.

-“Death by a 1000 cuts”: Anyone else feel this way?

-Sex Educator Erica Smith: https://www.instagram.com/ericasmith.sex.ed/?hl=en

-Here’s a bit more background on purity culture for those unaware: https://www.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/pa98x8/purity-culture-linday-kay-klein-pure-review

-A reminder that purity culture isn’t only found in religion or in Christianity, but I think it’s soread and most harm may be caused by religious systems.

-Spitting into a cup, crumpled flowers and dollar bills. Virginity and all the stigma around losing it is portrayed in some really weird ways. Weird analogies to compare with sex. I think I have and had a lotttttt of shame around lots of things, and they still impact me today.

-As Blair mentioned, if you want to save sex for marriage, that’s not bad, but the shame heaped on people who don’t IS a problem.

-I love that there is a purity culture dropout support group, especially for Queer folks. Soooooooooooo important!

-Sex obsession is NOT the same as being sex positive.

-“Abortion services are covered through insurance, but birth control is not.” Wow. How does that make sense?

-Anyone aged 12 years and older has the right to seek safe and accessible help for sexual health.

-Planned Parenthood is a Non-Profit, although I’ve been told by many before that they make money off of selling aborted baby parts… 🙄

-“Shame is the biggest part of stopping people from getting the help they need.”

-“Losing Virginity” versus “Sexual Debut”: A super interesting perspective. You tell me though, which one leads to more shame?

-Many parents have real concerns and fears around what happens when their kids have sex.

-What is slut shaming?: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slut-shaming

-What do you folks think? Can we have rational conversations about abortion?

-YES!!! BINARY LANGUAGE doesn’t leave room for the complexity of everything involved in the “pro-life, pro-choice” debate.

-“No one involved in the abortion process is excited about it…but they believe in the person’s right to make their choice.”

-Here is one article refuting the assumption that abortion is linked to higher chance of breast cancer: https://amp.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/medical-treatments/abortion-and-breast-cancer-risk.html
